Melanoma. Skin cancer. This is arguably a 16-year-old’s worst nightmare. For a deck hand on a boat in his spare time who loves to hunt, fish and then thrown into a whirlwind of a new life of hospital visits and treatment after treatment-this is what he least expected.
But then Make-A-Wish® Alabama offered Cody a wish.
He knew he wanted something that would last a lifetime; something that he could enjoy through his everyday worry and something that he could enjoy after the hospital. Then…it hit him.
A boy who is truly in love with nature and the woods; Cody wished to have a Labrador puppy that he can train to retrieve ducks when he is hunting. A best friend that can share in all of his hunting experiences alongside of hm. Cody received Remi in September 2014. The thought of a wish gave Cody hope, but receiving Remi gave Cody the strength he needed to overcome his cancer. Facing daily obstacles with his condition, Remi has given Cody a lifted spirit and best friend. Cody’s mom later shared with Make-A-Wish Alabama and said “Thank you for his wish, it has all been a miracle wish for him.”
As Remi goes away for training when she is six-months-old, Cody will continue to be active in her training and will go see her on weekends and may even be able to help train her.
Cody and Remi now continue to enjoy each other’s company and spend their time hunting and retrieving ducks. They will both continue making memories that will last a lifetime.
