Steps to Volunteer
All volunteers are asked to meet a series of requirements before becoming an active volunteer, including completing the volunteer application, speaking with our Senior Coordinator of Volunteer and Media Relations, and submitting information for the background check.
Step 1 - Schedule a Phone Call with our Senior Coordinator of Volunteer and Media Relations
During your phone call, you will have an opportunity to discuss the needs and opportunities in your area. You can reach out to Julianna at 205-440-1933.
Step 2 - Volunteer Application
Complete and return our Volunteer Application packet to the chapter office via mail, email or fax (pages 4 & 5 must have a physical signature not an electronic one):
Attn: Julianna Hallman
400 Vestavia Parkway, Suite 402
Vestavia Hills, AL 35216
Step 3 - Background Check
Due to the nature of our work, select volunteer positions must successfully complete a criminal background check every three years. Make-A-Wish does not employ or utilize as a volunteer any individual who has been convicted of a crime that (a) victimizes children, (b) is sexual in nature, or (c) involves violence, fraud, or significant theft. In addition, there is a $25 processing fee associated with our background check. We ask that you absorb this cost, thus allowing us to keep our costs down. Please contact us with any questions related to past convictions and/or our background check screening process as well as the associated cost.
Step 4 - Get Involved!
Volunteer paperwork takes about 2 weeks to process and approve. After your paperwork is processed, you will be contacted with detailed instructions as it relates to the next steps based on the opportunities you selected.
Our team is happy to answer any questions or address any concerns that you may have.
